How the Hotel became its Post Horn

At the current location of the Hotel Kreuz & Post, the horse stables of the Grindelwald post station stood in the 19th century. The name "Kreuz & Post" traces back to that time when daily stagecoaches operated, and the coachman sounded the post horn.

The End of Stagecoach

In 1890, the first steam train of the BOB began operating. The Berner Oberland Railway, connecting Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald, marked the end of the stagecoach era.

The Wengernalp Railway

In 1893, the Wengernalp Railway (WAB) began operations. It connects Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald with Kleine Scheidegg and remains the longest continuous cog railway in the world to this day.

Opening of the Hotel «Zum Weissen Kreuz»

With the development of the railway, tourism in Grindelwald began to flourish. In this thriving environment, the Hotel «Zum Weissen Kreuz» opened its doors in 1899, laying the foundation for a long tradition of warm hospitality.

The Roaring Twenties

In the 1920s, ski tourism in Grindelwald flourished. The construction of the Jungfrau Railway and the arrival of international guests, especially from England, turned the village into a popular winter sports destination. Ski races and winter festivals added to the vibrant atmosphere of the era.

Yuko Maki in Grindelwald

In 1921, Japanese alpinist Yuko Maki visited Grindelwald. Together with local guides, he accomplished the first ascent of the Eiger’s Mittellegi Ridge, a milestone that shaped Grindelwald’s early international alpine history.

First Ascent of the Eiger North Face

The first ascent of the notorious Eiger North Face, also known as the "Murder Wall," in 1938 brought global fame to Grindelwald. Prior to the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, the village once again gained attention, solidifying its reputation as a key hub for mountaineering and tourism.

From Dishwasher to Hotel Owner

In 1946, the Konzett family moved into the hotel. After World War II, Otto Konzett acquired the hotel "Zum Weissen Kreuz," where he had worked as a dishwasher in his youth. In the picture, Otto is the little boy at the bottom left.

Training for the Future

In 1952, Hansotto, on the far left, attended the hospitality course of the Canton of Bern together with his future brother-in-law, Ueli Kunz, third from the right.

Modernization

In 1963, the first major renovation of the hotel took place. The cellar was redesigned, and in place of the old "Offside Bar," the "Challistübli" and the new popular "Challi Bar" were created.

Expansion & Acquisition of the Räuberhaus

In 1968, the Konzett family expanded the hotel by acquiring the neighboring "Räuberhaus."

Opening – A New Chapter

After intensive work, the significantly expanded hotel celebrated its opening in the summer of 1970. It now offered 50 rooms with 90 beds, all equipped with bathrooms and toilets.

Martin’s Graduation from the Lausanne Hotel School

After completing his education at the Lausanne Hotel School, partly at the old campus on Avenue de Cour, Martin Konzett, third from the right in the picture, obtained the hospitality license for the Canton of Bern in 1978, laying the foundation for his career in gastronomy.

Redesign – Post Express

In 1982, the kiosk was expanded and turned into the "Snackbar Post Express," also known as the "Stehbar."

Transition – The Hotel Becomes a Joint-Stock Company

On June 19, 1990, Hansotto Konzett sold the hotel to the newly founded Hotel Kreuz & Post AG in Grindelwald, passing it on to the next generation.

Renovation – Panoramic Suites Instead of a Pool

In 1992, the Konzett family replaced the rooftop pool with a modern wellness area and two duplex panoramic suites offering stunning views.

Commitment to Environmental Protection

On January 23, 2007, Martin Konzett presented an innovative concept for a sustainable district heating system in Grindelwald during a hotel association meeting. The system, designed to run on wood and be independent of fossil fuels, was successfully implemented, and today the entire village center is heated in an environmentally friendly way.

Since the 2000s, regular investments have been made in the hotel to ensure modern comfort and first-class experiences for guests.

From Culinary Arts to Hospitality

Benjamin Konzett completed his culinary training with Michelin-starred chef Claude Frôté at the restaurant « Bocca » in St.-Blaise and gained international experience in starred restaurants. In 2014, he successfully graduated from the Lausanne Hotel School, becoming the fourth generation to follow in his family’s footsteps.
